Product detailed description
Achiote - Bixa orellana
Achiote (lat. Bixa orellana) is a tree reaching a height of 5–10 meters. One small achiote tree can produce up to 270 kg of fruit. These achiote fruits are inedible, heart-shaped, hiding a number of seeds inside. Each seed is covered with a reddish seed sac, which is the source of a yellow-orange dye. This dye was already used by Indian tribes to decorate the body or dye hair. The popular name "lipstick tree" indicates its other use. The dye called bixin has also become traditional in the food industry as a means of adding to various meat mixtures, to color cheeses, rice or as a substitute for expensive saffron.
Another widely used part of the plant is primarily the leaves. Infusions, poultices or tinctures are prepared from these.
Traditional dosage: Put 8–10 leaves (approx. 5 g) of dry matter in one liter of cold water and bring to a boil. Boil for about 5 minutes and strain. Drink one cup 3 times a day.
Contraindications: Due to the unclear effect on sugar metabolism (hypo- and hyperglycemic effect), it is not recommended for diabetics! The information about possible contraction of the uterine muscles excludes use by pregnant women. Side effects are not described. Not suitable for children under three years of age.
