True basil, lat. Ocimum basilicum, is an herb with a distinctive taste and aroma. It has an aromatic menthol-like scent. The taste is mildly spicy, even pungent. References to its origin can be found in ancient Indian myths and legends from the 4th to 6th centuries. It is grown all over the world and over hundreds of years, up to 60 different cultural forms of this plant have been bred. However, it only reached Europe in the 16th century.
It is used as a decorative and ornamental plant, in gastronomy, but it is also used in home cosmetics and phytotherapy, distillates from the top are used to produce perfumes and essential oils, as well as as a natural insect repellent.
The most commonly used and most cultivated in the world and in our country is true basil. In Italy, it is one of the basic spices that is an essential part of every kitchen and almost every dish.
Use in the kitchen:
- for preparing salads,
- dried basil as a spice especially for meat, fish, legumes,
- for seasoning cottage cheese and sausages,
- in soups and sauces.
