Betonica officinalis (lat. Betonica officinalis), also known as the common beet, is a widespread herb almost throughout the Czech Republic. Its most common locations are where there is enough sunlight. Beet can be found near bushes, in meadows, in forests and where there are no other herbs. Beet is not demanding on soil, it will be satisfied with poorer ones. The whole herb is the useful part. Beet experienced its greatest historical fame in Italy. It is said that its fame dates back to the times of the Roman emperor Augustus, who used it to ward off 47 ailments.
Beet is known as an antioxidant. As is known, antioxidants are substances that contain certain molecules that are able to limit or stop the activity of oxygen radicals.

External use:
A paste-like compress made from fresh, crushed beech leaves and flowers can be applied externally to ulcers and various skin ailments.
Traditional use: Pour one teaspoon of dried beech leaves with a cup of cold water and bring to the boil. Boil for 5 minutes and then leave to infuse under the lid for 10 minutes. Strain and drink 2–4 cups a day.
