The black walnut is a sturdy tree growing up to 40 m high and 25 m wide. Its homeland is North America – the eastern part of the USA, from where it was imported to Europe in the 17th century. It was first recorded in the Czech Republic in 1835 and is currently part of castle gardens and parks. The black walnut has brown-gray to black-gray, grooved bark, long pointed and serrated leaves. It is a monoecious tree with spherical fruits that contain edible kernels.
The black walnut blooms in May and June. The collected and used part is mainly the pericarp of the walnut tree, which is used both internally and externally.
