The black walnut is a sturdy tree growing up to 40 m tall and 25 m wide. Its homeland is North America - the eastern part of the USA, from where it was imported to Europe in the 17th century. It was first recorded in the Czech Republic in 1835. Currently, it can be seen in castle gardens and parks. The black walnut has brown-gray to black-gray grooved bark, long pointed and serrated leaves.

It is a monoecious tree with spherical fruits that contain edible kernels. The black walnut blooms in May and June. The harvested part is mainly the pericarp of the walnut, which is used internally.
