Blackcurrant, lat. Ribes nigrum, is a shrub growing up to 1.5 m tall. It decorates many a garden. All parts of the plant are strongly aromatic. The leaves of the currant are simple, alternate, 3–5 cm wide and oblong, with five palmately arranged lobes with serrated edges. The inflorescence is arranged in ten to twenty individual flowers, up to 8 mm long, while the entire inflorescence can be up to 8 cm in diameter. Each flower has a hairy calyx with yellow glands composed of five petals, which are longer than the petals. The homeland of the currant is Asia, and it has been cultivated in our country since ancient times.
Its phytotherapeutic use has been reported since the 16th century.
Blackcurrant supports the excretion of water from the body. It plays a role in body weight control. It has a positive effect on the condition of muscles and joints. It contributes to refreshing the body, especially during exertion and stress. It is an antioxidant.
Cooks add a few currant leaves to pickled vegetables - they improve their taste and do not spoil.
Traditional use:
Pour two teaspoons of dried currant leaves with a cup of boiling water and let it steep for 10 minutes. Then strain and drink a cup of infusion 2–3 times a day.
