Cordyceps is a parasitic fungus of the Ophiocordycipitaceae family that attacks insects or other arthropods. It has a very long development process, which can take up to six years.

The demand for natural cordyceps is currently so high that an artificially grown strain, which is labeled CS-4, has begun to be used for the production of dietary supplements. This strain has very similar effects to the naturally occurring fungus.
