Genuine cuttlefish bones are not pure white after mechanical cleaning and drying. Some manufacturers achieve the whiteness of cuttlefish bones by using very strong bleaching agents. We try to avoid this path and sell only purely natural products and not to endanger the final "consumers" of cuttlefish bones with the residual content of anything not specified, which could harm them.
Bright white does not mean high quality in the case of cuttlefish bones.

Cuttlefish bone is a reduced original shell of bivalve cephalopods, which we classify as mollusks. In the order of cuttlefish, it changed its meaning over a long period of development and became an internal organ.

In the order of cuttlefish, the living chamber of the shell is reduced to a small spiny protrusion, the shell has ceased to fulfill the role of shelter and has become an internal support for the body. Only the area with the chambers remains, which has moved
dorsally into the body under the skin in the form of the cuttlefish bone (sepion). It is made of modifications of calcium carbonate, mainly aragonite, and fulfills the original function of the phragmocone. It is formed by solid calcite on the underside,
to which a porous, fragile layer with many microscopic gas chambers arranged in lamellae adjoins.

Depending on the type of cuttlefish, its shape is oval, lanceolate or rhomboid, and it is approximately as long as the mantle. As the cuttlefish grows, individual lamellae of the cuttlefish bone grow, one per day in tropical species,
one every two to three days in cold-loving species.

Cuttlefish bone is traditionally used as a high-quality source of easily absorbed organic calcium for domestic breeding of many species of animals, especially for turtles, lizards, birds, snails, etc.
It contains at least 30% usable calcium and 0.03% phosphorus. (The human body, for example, utilizes only less than 5% of mineral calcium).
