Smaller natural figs are pear-shaped and, like other organic dried fruits, are not sulfurized or otherwise chemically treated. These figs are excellent for direct consumption, but they are also suitable for preparing desserts and for sweetening porridge and muesli mixtures. If you want to cut the figs, you can make your job easier by cooling them in the refrigerator first. Dried figs are a good source of fiber and minerals, especially calcium, magnesium and iron. 100 g contains an average of 55 g of sugars, mostly glucose and fructose and a minimal amount of sucrose. Figs contain ficin, which is an enzyme that breaks down proteins, similar to papain in papaya or bromelain in pineapple. Due to their high fiber (insoluble lignin) and ficin content, figs facilitate and accelerate digestion and excretion.

Figs probably originate from Western Asia, from where they were spread to the Mediterranean region. Remains of figs have been found in excavations dating back at least 5000 years BC. The health benefits of figs were already known to our ancient ancestors. The Roman historian Pliny wrote: "Figs strengthen. It is the best food for those who are weakened by a long illness and are recovering. They increase the strength of the young and improve the health of the old, who then look younger and have fewer wrinkles."
