Liposomes are made from pure phospholipids isolated from sunflower lecithin. They can vary in size from a few nanometers to tens of micrometers. When combined with water, phospholipids form microscopic structures with a cavity in the middle filled with water, surrounded by a phospholipid capsule. In the water in the middle of the phospholipid, it is then possible to dissolve other molecules, for example vitamin or glutathione, which we need to easily absorb into the body. And while hydrophilic (water-attracting) molecules can be held inside the encapsulated core, hydrophobic (water-repelling) substances can dissolve into the phospholipid membrane itself—thus liposomes can transport both hydrophilic and hydrophobic molecules. And thanks to these unique properties, they are used both by mother nature, e.g. in breast milk, and also by specialized producers, namely in the production of medicines or food supplements.
The main benefit of using liposomes for the transport of micronutrients is that the liposomes themselves are not disturbed in any way by the digestion process while passing through the digestive tract.
