PEAK ABSORPTION AND USABILITY
Liposomes are made from pure phospholipids isolated from sunflower lecithin. They can vary in size from a few nanometers to tens of micrometers. When combined with water, phospholipids form microscopic structures with a cavity in the middle filled with water, surrounded by a phospholipid capsule. In the water in the middle of the phospholipid, it is then possible to dissolve other molecules, for example vitamin or glutathione, which we need to easily absorb into the body. And while hydrophilic (water-attracting) molecules can be held inside the encapsulated core, hydrophobic (water-repelling) substances can dissolve into the phospholipid membrane itself—thus liposomes can transport both hydrophilic and hydrophobic molecules. And thanks to these unique properties, they are used both by mother nature, e.g. in breast milk, and also by specialized producers, in the production of medicines or food supplements.
The main benefit of using liposomes for the transport of micronutrients is that the liposomes themselves are not disturbed in any way by the digestion process while passing through the digestive tract. In the case of classic dietary supplements, the body very often breaks down many complex molecules before they are absorbed, or simply does not absorb them so easily, or is subsequently metabolized and broken down by the liver, so the overall usability is greatly reduced.
On the other hand, liposomes are easily absorbed thanks to their stability and ideal size. But that is not all. The difference is also in the faster way liposomes get into the bloodstream and into the cell. In the following step, they are absorbed into all cells through so-called passive diffusion. This is the difference compared to classic supplements containing vitamins and minerals, which in the first step enter the liver, where they are metabolized and only then enter the bloodstream.
However, liposomes go even further in terms of absorbability. They help transport active molecules directly into cellular processes where micronutrients are required in large quantities. The phospholipid bilayer of the liposome is able to merge with other bilayers, such as the cell wall itself - and this is how the contents of the liposome (vitamins or other beneficial substances) are transported directly into the cells.
