Styrian pumpkin oil is a traditional delicacy, pressed in the traditional way on site from local seeds of a specific pumpkin variety. Only such oil carries a protected geographical indication within the EU and can be recognized by the sticker on the lid, or at least by the yellow-blue round EU logo on the label. Other pumpkin oils may not be labeled as Styrian. The production of Styrian pumpkin oil mainly requires patience and experience. We need 30 to 50 pumpkins for one liter of oil. After cutting the pumpkin, the seeds are removed, washed and dried. They are then ground into a paste resembling dough. Pumpkin oil gets its typical dark color from the seed shell, the inside of the seeds is white. The so-called "seed cake" (the mass of ground seeds) is immediately transferred to a kneading machine with the addition of a little water and salt. Now the most difficult part of the production begins - roasting. The cake is heated until the water has completely evaporated. This causes the protein in the seeds to precipitate and the pumpkin oil to separate. During roasting, the oil also acquires its characteristic taste and aroma. The roasted cake is now placed in a hydraulic press. The pressure is increased slowly so that the oil has time to flow out. Fresh pumpkin oil must rest for a while before being bottled.
Pumpkin oil has a distinctive, typical taste that goes well with potatoes, legumes, soups and hearty salads.
TIP: If you decide to store the oil in the refrigerator, we recommend taking the bottle out a few minutes before using it. This is how its taste and aroma are best used.
