Total hardness of water directly affects the organic functions of fish, plants and microorganisms, such as fish skin, gills and fry. The GH test is suitable for testing water from freshwater and marine aquariums and garden ponds. The total hardness of water in marine aquariums has a high value - about 300o dH. The total hardness (GH) of water is the value of dissolved calcium and magnesium salts. These salts have a direct effect on the metabolism of fish, plants and microorganisms. Water with a high content of these salts is referred to as hard, and water with a low salt content is referred to as soft.

For most freshwater fish, the optimal GH level is between 6 - 16o dH. Carbonate hardness (KH) is determined by the content of carbonates and bicarbonates. This value is particularly important because the pH value depends on it.
