The organic nitrogen content from fish waste, uneaten food and rotting plants is removed in different stages by special types of microorganisms.
A high NO2 value signals a disruption of the natural biological filtration system. The ideal NO2 value should be between 0 and 0.3 mg/l, the NO2 concentration should not exceed 0.8 mg/l. Concentrations exceeding 1.6 mg/l are harmful to your fish. It is important to check the NO2 value at weekly intervals. A wide range of concentrations can be measured (also NO2 concentrations below 0.3 mg/l).
