Valerian has been known as a traditional herb since ancient times. The Roman polymath Pliny the Elder called valerian nardus gallica, which can be loosely translated as a fragrant herb growing in the north of the Roman Empire. Among other things, it was also used as a protective agent against enchantment. In folk superstition, valerian had the ability to resist the plots of all evil forces. Witches are said to have hated its pungent scent and always preferred to avoid it. A bundle of valerian hung above the door would set itself in motion if an unworthy person crossed the threshold. Valerian in the mother's bed drove away evil spirits that could harm the newborn. A rhizome of valerian pounded into powder and served in a glass of wine won the love of the person who drank it. If a gambler threw a valerian root wrapped in a scarf under the table while playing, he would get a favorable card and his winnings would be guaranteed. Valerian was also given to cows after calving to prevent witches from having evil powers over them.
Traditional use:Pour one teaspoon of dried valerian root with 250 ml of boiling water, cover and let it steep until it cools to room temperature. Always drink lukewarm, twice a day.
