Vilcacora, known in Spanish as Uňa de Gato (translated as "cat's claw"), is the queen of Peruvian herbs and one of the main ingredients of all phytotherapeutic treatments.

Vilcacora is a plant native to South America, specifically the Peruvian Andes. A climbing plant, sometimes referred to as a liana, growing to a length of 30 m, it reaches maturity after about 20 years. Only then is Uňa de Gato suitable for phytotherapeutic use. Vilcacora has been known in the traditional medicine of indigenous tribes of South America for 2000 years. It was only discovered for the Western world in 1972 through the story of the healed planter Don Luis, when it began to be sold throughout Latin America. In In 1974, an Austrian research group with Klaus Keplinger began to systematically work on clarifying its pharmacological properties.

An ancient legend of the largest Peruvian indigenous tribe, the Asháninka, tells the story of its discovery of the vilcacora as follows: A hunter of the Asháninka tribe went into the jungle to provide food for his family. After a long and strenuous hunt, however, he was still without a single catch and was staggering through the jungle with only the rest of his strength. Then he saw a puma tearing apart a vine with its claws and drinking the sap flowing from it. Then the puma, filled with new strength, caught a deer. The hunter followed the puma's example, also drank the sap of the miraculous vine and fell asleep. Upon awakening, he found himself full of strength and immediately caught a large armadillo. Since then, the vilcacora has been recognized as a sacred plant. The Asháninka believe that the discovery of vilcacora was not a coincidence, but that it was shown to them by God, through a puma, which they have since stopped hunting and started to worship.

Perhaps thanks to this legend, vilcacora is called Uňa de Gato in Spanish. However, the name is more likely derived from the curved thorns growing on the vine, which resemble cat claws in their appearance. Of all the plants in the Uncaria genus, however, only two (Uncaria guinansis and Uncaria tomenthosa) are used in phytotherapy. Uncaria tomenthosa contains more effective substances and is preferred due to its wider range of uses.

Ingestion:Using vilcacora is important primarily for our immune system. It supports its ability to provide natural defenses. It has a positive effect on the process of phagocytosis. This immune system prevents the spread of unwanted foreign substances in the body and absorbs old or damaged cells. Due to its immunostimulating properties, it is therefore inappropriate to use vilcacora after organ transplantation or during pregnancy. Vilcacora could support the assumption of our body's immune system that these are foreign cells and could try to eliminate these foreign cells. Other reported positive effects of Uncaria tomenthos include maintaining the health of our joints. Older people in particular or people who overexert their joints, e.g. during certain sports, should use vilcacora as a supplement to their lifestyle.

Recommended dosage and method of use: Mix half a teaspoon in a small amount of water. A paste is formed, which is then diluted with water. Use 3 times a day.

TIP for preparation: First, put the required amount in a glass, add only 2 times more water than the content of the powder and mix until it forms a thick paste. This paste can be diluted with liquid as desired. This way, no lumps will form.

Warning: Not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women, children under 3 years of age, and people before or after organ transplantation. Indigenous Peruvian tribes also used vilcacora decoction as a contraceptive, and it is therefore not suitable for women trying to get pregnant. It does not replace a varied diet. Keep out of the reach of children. Do not exceed the recommended daily dosage.
