It is a popular dish to eat during the New Year because it is believed to bring good luck and prosperity in the new year. The rice cakes used in tteokguk are called garaetteok ( 가래떡 which are made from glutinous rice flour. Garaetteok is cut into thin oval shapes and then cooked in beef, chicken or fish broth. Tteokguk is usually garnished with thinly sliced eggs, green onions and gim (Korean seaweed). It is also sometimes served with mandu (Korean dumplings). Tteokguk is a delicious and hearty soup that is perfect for cold winter days. It is also a good source of carbohydrates and protein. Ingredients: Rice (98.9%), salt, alcohol, acidity regulator (E330). Preparation: Rinse the sliced rice cake in cold water. Place the rice cake in the boiling broth and cook for another 1 minute. Serve with garlic, black pepper, egg, green onions and crushed seaweed.
